Conroy Medical HandySeal

HandySeal is a sealing pistol used to hermetically seal PVC blood tubes during transfusions etc. It was developed by Malin Orebäck (former Andersson), Daniel Höglund and Peter Ejvinsson at Ergonomidesign in 1998 for Conroy Medical of Stockholm. The company more than doubled its turnover in 12 months and is has established on both the American and Japanese markets.

HandySeal is pistol-like in shape. Inside this portable, battery operated implement is a tiny, but powerful, radio transmitter. The blood-filled tube is placed in the groove in its muzzle and when the “trigger” is pulled the transmitter emits a wave of heat that melts the PVC. The tube is simultaneously cut and sealed in one air-tight, germ-free action.

Through the cooperation with SVID, Conroy Medical saw the opportunities and advantages of design and the value of engaging a designer. HandySeal won the award for Excellent Swedish Design in 1999.
