Where is research on design carried out?

Design is very much to do with the user. It entails understanding what the user actually needs and questioning the existing solutions in order to create long-term value.

Solutions need to be questioned. And the users need to have a central role in formulating the solution. Design research is multidisciplinary and cross-sector, and is available at a number of universities and colleges. Design research produces knowledge about the design process per se, but also about the users and about the needs that generate new business and new knowledge inside and outside the design field.

SVID has consequently chosen to view design research in a fairly broad perspective, and the list below therefore also includes subject fields such as interaction design and human-computer interaction (HCI). A boundary has however been drawn in relation to design history, which is often pursued within the history of art.
