Where are you on the design staircase?

The design staircase shows how design is used in a business or activity.

The higher up the design staircase, the more strategically important design is to the business or activity. One way to plan to improve your design work is to find out what level you are at on the design staircase. From there you can decide what type of measures you should implement.

What step is your business on?

Step 1 – Perceived non-design

Design may exist within your company but is not something you are working on actively. You never really talk about design at your company.

Step 2 - Design as styling

You regard design as something that is added at the end of the development phase. Design is a matter of form and appearance.

Step 3 – Design as process

You regard design as an important aspect but not as the determining factor. You choose to use design as a method when you want to develop something new in your business.

Step 4 – Design as strategy and innovation

You regard design methodology as a key determining factor in your business concept. Design is a self-evident management-level issue with its own intrinsic strategic value.
