Medcore Vivar Organ Cooler
Medcore Vivar Organ Cooler is a cooling table designed for use in the transplantation of organs. It is the work of industrial designer Maria Schmidt Larsson, who had been engaged by Medcore to design a cooling table that was both ergonomic and medically functional.
Starting with a cooling table produced by Vivar Medical AB, she initially developed a proposal in stainless steel. However, due to technical difficulties in production, the steel was replaced by corian, a material used in kitchen sinks, yacht and bar interiors.
Corian proved to be a better choice for this application. It is easy to form and to keep clean, as it can withstand powerful detergents. The table's strengths lie in its ability to maintain a constant temperature during organ transplantation procedures and in its ergonomic design, which makes it comfortable to sit at even for prolonged periods.
A prototype of the table was exhibited at a medical conference, where it was given a very warm reception. The commercial market introduction took place in 2001, first on the European market and then in the USA.
